The right motor insurance
cover - how do you get it?
People rarely apply adequate
care and attention to the process of buying motor insurance cover. The
norm in the UK is to complete the process very rapidly, allowing price
to largely determine the choice of policy. Any attention paid to policy
features is limited, if it's paid at all.
Price comparison sites tend to encourage this faulty approach by
focusing on a myth - that price is all that really matters when you
renew your cover. Worse, even if you are keen to find out as much as
you can about the cover, price comparison sites tend to provide, at
best, limited policy information.
People seem to have overlooked or chosen to disregard the fact that
price comparison sites offer no quality control. You have to apply that
yourself. And, when you try to, they don't actually provide you with
enough information to do it. Looked at from this perspective - that is,
from an objectively prudent perspective - it's surprising that the
majority in the UK now buy via a price comparison system.
Indeed, this becomes all the more surprising when you look at the
merits of the alternative, that is, going direct to a well-known
insurer for your motor insurance cover. Many people have rejected this
approach - albeit incorrectly - on the basis that unless you compare
numerous prices you are not going to get a competitive deal.
However, as it's obvious that the cheapest of thousands of quotes is
not going to be a good policy choice, then those that still favour use
of a price comparison site must ask themselves which price is right for
them. In the absence of a review of the associated cover for each
quote, this becomes an arbitrary choice. Do they select the fifth
cheapest price, for example, or the tenth?
So, if using a price comparison site still results on making a choice
on the basis of the cover - as it should - while the cheapest
policies are better avoided, on what basis can it be argued that a
price comparison site is a very easy or sensible way to find cover? On
the other hand, if you go direct, you get a good level of cover as
standard while market forces ensure competitive pricing for similar
policies anyway.
